Dunlop Shatters Lap Record At KDM Cookstown 100

Last weekend saw the first road race of the season and the 91st year of the Cookstown 100 road races, being held once again over the Orritor circuit just outside Cookstown.

Weather conditions on the Friday practice saw several seasons all in one day with rain, sleet, hail, strong winds and very low temperatures, which was far from ideal conditions for the two-wheeled sport. Poor spectator attendance could have been the result of inclement weather conditions or yet more enforced rules and regulations upon the sport.

The 24-year-old County Antrim rider Michael Dunlop took the KDM Cookstown 100 double, with victories in the 10-lap feature race and the Open event. Dunlop on his 1000cc MD Racing Honda Fireblade broke the lap record several times on the way to reeling in early leader Lincolnshire rider Guy Martin aboard his Tyco Suzuki by TAS GSXR 1000cc machine in the main race of a sun-drenched nail-biting day.

Guy Martin didn’t loose out completely as he took a podium win and beat Dunlop into second place in the Supersport 600 race.

On the day William Dunlop was the 250cc victor, Paul Robinson won the 125 class and Jamie Hamilton as part of the KMR team won the Supertwin race.
