Speed Weekend At Nutts Corner Raceway 16 June 2013

Tricky Micky Came, Conquered and left as the 2013 F2 Irish Open Champion!!

 Micky Brennan

Current World Champion Micky Brennan provided a world class drive to capture the Irish Open title at Nutts Corner Raceway in what was an action packed race. The heats were run in 2/3 formats providing a minimum of 20 car heats, which were won by Ballyclare man Sam McKay, Belfast’s Graham Fegan and former Brisca F1 star Carlos Perez from England. The title decider got off to a dramatic start with several cars coming to grief and subsequently a race suspension was called. On the restart heat winners McKay and Fegan tangled on the home straight resulting in Fegan’s car being plunged into a multiple barrel roll finally coming to rest on the Enfield, when Fegan was given the all clear from medical staff and the track was cleared the race action commenced again. Perez made a picture perfect start on the green but not far behind World Champion Brennan was slicing his way through the pack, come the lap boards Brennan was well clear out front leaving the rest to follow, Brennan completed the distance to take the title win from Perez and defending Champion Chris Burgoyne from Airth in Scotland himself a former World Champion in the formula. Concluding Saturday night’s action was the Grand National event, which was won by Antrim man Christopher Kincaid. On day two of the speed weekend the F2 competed for the annual George Fegan Tyres Perpetual Trophy where the heats were shared by Fegan and Kincaid before Kincaid went on to take the title race and indeed his third race win of the weekend. English man John Broach won Sunday’s Grand National event for the F2’s.

All action in the rain

Playing second fiddle to the F2’s were the ultra competitive Junior Rods who were in action for the Young Gun World Cup title which come with the added bonus of the winning driver earning the right to wear the coveted gold roof for the next 12 months, the heat wins were shared by Ballymena’s Adrian McConnell and Irish Champion Dean McCrory before McCrory went on to claim victory in the title race providing an excellent drive, he was followed across the line by Jamie McCurdy and Aaron Moody, following post race scrutineering runner up McCurdy was disqualified promoting Moody to second and fourth place finisher Niall McFerran to third spot . In the support action Irish Champion Dan Feeney added The Pace Tyres Cup to his collection by crossing the line in front of Ryan Stewart and Christopher Duff. Ross Houston continued his good run of success in 2013 by winning the Challenge cup with Irish Champion Ryan Wright having an off night coming home runner up in front of Jeff Martin in third. James Goldie had a prefect hat trick in the speed stock section with clean sweep of wins including the golden helmet title race where he was followed across the line by Billy Finnegan Jnr. Lyle Murray was the victor in the King of the Corner for the popular group 2 lightning rods displaying glimpses of his old flair as he romped to victory, runner up was Ricky Shaw a former Irish Champion in the formula with current Irish Champion Curtis Greer in third. To round the action packed programme of events the Yamaha powered rapid Legends were in action providing 2 demonstration races and in fact their first appearances on a stock car track in Ireland, arranged by former 2 wheel road racer, ex stock car champion and more recently engine building genius Ivor Greenwood. Racing returns to ‘’ The Corner’’ on Wednesday 26th of June at 7.30pm featuring BriSCA F2 Stock Cars, ORC Lightning Rods, 1300 Stock Cars, Junior Rods and the first event of the season for the Open Hot Rods which is likely to attract several of the local based National Hot Rod Stars looking for some last minute track time in preparation for the their World Final in July.
